A little over 5 years ago, I reached down to pick something up off my kitchen floor and I could literally not get up! While not expected, it wasn’t a complete surprise that my back seized up like that. I have had back issues for a long time. To compound that, I am a long distance runner with 7 marathons under my belt and a work out fanatic. I have had ongoing back issues, but not like this. I had been told in the past and now it was reinforced that I needed back surgery and soon. Oh and right before this, I was told by an Orthopedic that I needed surgery on the meniscus in my knee!
Serendipitously, I had just heard from a friend about a new hot yoga called Bikram and that it might be able to help me. So literally with help to get in and out of my car, because I could not stand up straight, I went to my first Bikram class. When I left the class I could almost jog to my car. I proceeded to go EVERY day religiously for six months. In the short term, the pain subsided and I could wear heels again and incorporate some workout programs to stay in shape and strengthen my core and back muscles.
After the first 6 months, I began to slowly build running back into my regimen. My knee also healed without surgery! While continuing to do Bikram almost every day, I increased my running routine to a reasonable level where I can stay sane and not be in pain. There might not be any more marathons in my future; however being able to run regularly is a godsend!
I run a very demanding business and if not for Bikram, and the ability to run there is no way I could make it through the day.
Bikram literally kept me from going under the knife, twice!
