My first experience with Bikram yoga was in December, 2015. I had tried 'yoga' in the past at the gym. I never felt like I got a workout, was bored, did not break a sweat. But this is BIKRAM. This is the most amazing, and productive workout I have ever had-and I've tried everything. You are breathing hard, sweating like you never have and gaining confidence. For about the first month or two I wore yoga capris.
Marah told me I really needed to wear shorts so I could see myself locking my knees (so important). I was so hesitant as I am quite self conscious of my thick (cellulite) thighs. I said never would I wear the short shorts I saw everyone wearing around me.
I started with a bermuda length, but in no time, I was wearing the yoga shorts!! Why?? Because I had gained a tremendous amount of confidence-confidence I have never had in my 41 years. It's been 8 months now. I have been going consistently since I started. Bikram has changed my life. I started Bikram with a diagnosed eating disorder, and a 10+ year history of depression, very low self esteem and hardly any confidence. Have I lost a ton of weight? No. BUT, my body has completely changed. This has taught me the number on the scale is irrelevant.
It's how you feel. And I feel incredible. My mood is incredible, and stable. My eating issues are, well, no longer an issue!! Bikram just makes you want to be healthier. Do I still eat sugar, ice cream etc? Absolutely!! But the difference is, I am satisfied with so much less now.
The best testimonial ever: I have learned to love and appreciate my legs!! Are they perfect? Gosh no. But I've embraced them, and I now walk (in much shorter shorts than I would ever dream of wearing) with my head held high, and the confidence I've never imagined.
Now let's move on to Bikram Rochester's newest owner, Marah. I was intrigued by Marah the first day I met her. Her South African accent, her zen like state, her candidness. She was truly like no one I had ever met. As much as I was intrigued, I felt very vulnerable when she spoke to me. She listens when you talk, and takes it all in-to the point that there would be silence because I was done talking and she just sat there smiling at me. Awkward!! Quickly, she 'taught' me how to be a better listener, just by observing her actions. Marah has also taught me how to brew my own Kombucha at home. The best Kombucha I have ever had is hers. She has a true talent.
She commercially brewed in South Africa so the girl knows what she's doing!! She is a kind soul. Warm, inviting, and gives the best hugs!! In class, watch out-she doesn't call it in. She makes you work! She doesn't just recite the dialogue-she is constantly giving pointers on how the pose should be adjusted-and just the slightest tweak can make a world of difference. She is a happy, uplifting woman that truly draws on the energy of the students and gets very excited and very into her teaching! I now consider Marah a good friend. I learn something every time I come. About the studio-amazing setup. Small, warm (no pun intended) and cozy. Surrounded by wood walls, quality flooring, this is no 'gym'. Once you enter the 105 degree room, you are in Heaven.
