Bikram Yoga

Regular practice of the Bikram series of postures results in an infinite number of benefits including injury repair, illness prevention, weight loss, increased flexibility, better circulation, reduced stress, and overall peace of mind. Bikram yoga is a process that can also reduce the symptoms of many chronic diseases, and is an excellent preventive activity for parts of the body that are healthy. In time, you'll learn to focus your mind and control your breath, leading you to work harder, deeper, and calmer. As you improve this relationship you will realize the true meaning of yoga: a union of the body, mind, and spirit.

What to expect

By the end of a Bikram Yoga class, you will have worked every muscle, tendon, joint, ligament, internal organ, and gland while systematically moving fresh, oxygenated blood to 100% of the body. These postures work synergistically and cumulatively to put the body back on track and in balance. Bikram Yoga builds strength, balance, and flexibility by gently stretching and massaging the spine, muscles, tendons, joints, and all internal organs of the body. Lung capacity is expanded, leading to greater vitality. Bones are strengthened. Joints are opened and lubricated. Muscles are strengthened, toned, and made more flexible. What is Bikram Yoga?

How Does Bikram Hot Yoga Benefit the Overall Body?

Half Moon Posture

Half Moon Posture

Stronger, Toned Muscles

Some Bikram poses help you develop muscle strength, especially in the arms, legs, back and abdominals, according to Vanderbilt University. Bikram students hold poses for at least five breaths, thus making strength-related demands on the body in order to hold the poses. Standing poses help strengthen your lower body, especially the quadriceps and hamstrings. Keeping the arms extended in standing postures also helps strengthen the arms; arm balances contribute to core strength and arm strength simultaneously. You'll also develop greater back strength and, overall, your body will become more toned.

GREATER BALANCE AND FLEXIBILITY

Bikram’s balancing poses often involve standing on one leg, helping you to achieve better balance through practice. Holding poses for five counts or longer helps you practice stillness and equanimity; Bikram students are often encouraged to gaze into the mirror during balancing poses to increase their focus. Longer pose counts also contribute to increased flexibility. As your muscles lengthen and relax into the pose, you'll feel more limber. By repeating each pose twice, the body has the chance to sink deeper into the stretch.

ENDURANCE AND HYDRATION

Because Bikram classes are so hot, you will sweat a lot during your yoga practice. You will also have to drink plenty of water so your body is properly hydrated. Although science hasn’t yet validated claims that excess sweat helps rid the body of toxins, people sometimes say they feel refreshed after profuse sweating. Bikram hot yoga helps work out your heart, too.

CALMNESS, WELLNESS FOR THE MIND AND BODY

Bikram’s emphasis on deep breathing, staying focused and developing mental determination might make you feel more centered during and after class. Over time, deep breathing and greater mental focus might make you feel less stressed or anxious. As a result, you may feel more relaxed and productive. Embracing yoga’s positive message of self-acceptance might encourage you to make healthier lifestyle choices, thereby contributing to better overall physical and mental well-being. Transforming Stress With Bikram yoga

Christine Carmichael, Ph.D., recently defended her doctoral dissertation in Michigan State University’s Department of Forestry.  We sat down with this Mason, Michigan native to get her personal take on the practice of Bikram Yoga and how it has influenced her life, her health, and her academic career. Transforming stress with Bikram Yoga

How long have you been practicing yoga in general, and Bikram Yoga specifically? I started a regular practice at Bikram Yoga Capital Area in October 2015.  I had practiced in the same yoga lineage in Detroit for a few months prior to that, and many other types of yoga over the past several years.

How would you summarize the benefits you have gained from this yoga? There is so much to it. First of all, my anxiety no longer takes me away with it. In higher education, we are pressured to use our thoughts a lot.  But in order for that to work really well, your body and your core being of stillness also needs nurturing.  In academia you will get a lot of intellectual stimulation.  But I needed Bikram Yoga to have physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.  Specifically to be able to do the intellectual! I’d also say it has helped me be much more compassionate to my coworkers, to find more effective ways to work together, and to deal better with deadlines, external pressures, or internal insecurities.

What would you say to someone who has reservations about practicing? This yoga has nothing at all to do with being perfect at the posture. There are things that felt absolutely impossible when I first started.  I could not possibly take a six-count inhale and six-count exhale. But I kept trying.  And now I can. That is physical proof.  I can stay in postures that I never thought I would be able to stay in. So if you are someone who needs concrete evidence of health benefits, you will definitely get it with this practice.  You only have to try.

Could you try to explain how Bikram Yoga has reduced your stress? In any professional setting, you never know who you are going to interact with, or what their own stress levels are going to be. Bikram Yoga has allowed me to cultivate a healthier response to any stimulation or response that I get from anyone else.  It has allowed me to enter into a stressful environment and still create a healthy space for myself. It is so powerful to be in a situation (i.e. the yoga class) where you encounter physical limitations, negative thoughts, and distractions, and to then learn how to focus and breathe. You learn how to keep moving towards healing, specifically in the midst of challenges.

How does the practice help with situations outside of the room? The room is a microcosm of what you experience in life.  Things challenge you in multiple ways. Our instinct is usually to give up when we are in an intense situation. Now, you don’t have to go all out, but you also don’t need to give up.  You can try, and you can breathe.

Any words you would like to add? I am much more capable than I ever thought I was – of navigating any challenge, because of Bikram Yoga.  I do not know how I would have finished my degree without it.
